How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?
You are given a small pill to take prior to your dental appointment. Your companion will accompany you to our office. By the time you arrive you will be very drowsy. When you arrive in our office, you will be escorted into the comfort room, covered with a thick, warm blanket and placed on a monitor to watch your vital signs. After you are comfortable the experienced clinical team at Warren M. Krutchick DDS will take care of your dental needs. When your treatment is completed your companion will return you home to finish your comfortable, relaxing day.
With sedation dentistry, there is nothing to fear. It’s time to take back the control and take command of your dental health. No more discomfort. No more embarrassment. No more time wasted.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Oral Conscious Sedation dentistry is performed under the supervision of specially-trained dentists. As any treatment has potential risks and benefits, the risks of properly administered sedation dentistry are very low. Our office uses a limited number of medications, making it easier to track and reverse problems that may occur on rare occasions. For extra safety, reversing agents are available that can counteract the sedating medication within a few minutes.
What special training is required for a sedation dentistry permit? The American Dental Association requires the completion of a 60 hour course. There are strict requirements for course content, including practical experience sedating patients, as well as extensive classroom instruction.
Most states follow the ADA’s 60-hour recommendation. However, New York’s requirements are even more extensive. They require an additional 20 hours of training. Few general dentists fulfill these requirements, therefore relatively few dentists can provide oral conscious sedation at this time. Some patients ask if they can have sedation dentistry in your office if they continue with their regular dentist for other procedures? Our answer is, of course you can! Each dentist uses his or her own clinical judgment to determine what treatment is needed and is in your best interest. Prior to your services, Dr. Krutchick performs a comprehensive exam to determine necessary treatments and if you are a candidate for oral conscious sedation.
